What Is Sustainability and Why Is It Important?
Students Prepare Garden Boxes

Family and Consumer Sciences students in Mrs. Rau’s Principles of Foods class learn about the importance of reducing carbon emissions, protecting the environment and promoting a healthy ecosystems. One example is eat locally-produced organic food. Statistics indicate that 13% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions result from the production and transportation of food. Transporting food requires fuel and fertilizers which are typically fossil fuel-based. Students learn that by reducing the amount of dairy and beef consumed, controlling the amount of water they use, reusing and recycle items and growing their own foods are just a few ways they can assist in dramatically reducing carbon footprints and promote sustainability in their local community. As part of this unit students developed garden boxes in which they can grow small plants and herbs inside their home in a window during the winter months or outside during the seasonal growing times of the year.
